What is AAUW?

AAUW, the American Association of University Women, was founded in 1881 by a few foresighted women in order to broaden opportunities and assist other women in higher education. With more than 100,000 members, AAUW is the oldest and largest national organization working for all women and girls. Membership is open to all who hold an associate’s or equivalent or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Those who do not hold such a degree may affiliate as Friends of the Buffalo Branch and undergraduates may become Student Associates.

AAUW has more than 1,000 branches across the continental United States, Alaska , Hawaii , Guam , and Puerto Rico .  AAUW members enjoy opportunities to network at the local, state and national levels, sponsor community action projects to promote equity, serve in leadership positions, and lobby local and state legislators on AAUW priority issues.

The Buffalo (NY) Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in 1890 and is one of the largest AAUW branches in New York State with approximately 150 members. Our members represent women leaders from the arts, business, education, government, law, medicine, science, and technology.

Our national mission is clear:
To advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy.

AAUW encourages diversity and has adopted the following statement:
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

The AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund provides funds to advance education, research, and self-development for women, while the Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for gender discrimination.

Anyone with an Associate’s Degree or higher from an accredited educational institution is eligible to join AAUW. In addition, those who have not had the opportunity to achieve that may become a “friend” of the Buffalo Branch.
